los animales

No he tenido noticias de los animales.

¿Todavía existen? Aquellos sapos

a los que conocía tan bien. Y los zorros,

¿Todavía andan por ahí en la oscuridad?

Imposible.

the animals

I have no news of the animals.

Do they still exist? Those toads

I used to know so well. And the foxes,

Are they still out there in the dark?

Impossible. Where a horse used to graze

In my dream –an emptiness, edge of a cliff

On which I balance myself

With no skill and plenty of luck.

I can see now that I’ll have to construct

My bestiary in some other manner:

Without a bone or an eye,

Without even a track of blood in the snow,

And the barking

Reaching over my shoulders.

Alone, without a model-

It will be up to me

To imagine, out of stones and debris

that are left, a new species

A tooth,

An udder

Full of milk.
