ángeles caídos

“¿Quiénes son?”

“Ángeles caídos que no eran bastante buenos

para ser salvados, ni bastante malos

para ser perdidos”, dice la gente del pueblo.

Llegan a mi limpia hoja

de papel y dejan una mancha Rorschach.

No lo hacen por crueles,

lo hacen para darme un signo—

quieren forzarme, como dijo una vez Aubrey

Beardsley,

a moverlo hasta que algo salga.

Aunque soy torpe,

cumplo.

Pues soy como ellos—

salvada y perdida a la vez,

cayendo como Humpty Dumpty

abajo del alfabeto.

Cada mañana los corro de mi cama

y cuando se meten en la ensalada,

revolcándose en ella como un perro,

los entresaco uno por uno

así como mi hija

entresaca las anchoas.

En mayo bailan sobre los junquillos,

gastando los dedos de sus pies

riendo como peces.

En noviembre,

mes del pavor,

chupan su niñez de las moras

y las vuelven agrias e incomibles.

Sin embargo son compañeros.

Distribuyen su magia

de Salvavidas Surtidas

y hacen menearse la vida.

Me acompañan al dentista

y protegen del taladro.

Al mismo tiempo,

van conmigo a clases

y mienten a mis alumnos.

Oh ángel caído,

compañero dentro de mí,

susurra algo sagrado

antes de que me pellizques

hasta el sepulcro.

The fallen angels

They come on to my clean

sheet of paper and leave a Rorschach blot.

They do not do this to be mean,

they do it to give me a sign

they want me, as Aubrey Beardsley once said,

to shove it around till something comes.

Clumsy as I am,

I do it.

For I am like them –

both saved and lost,

tumbling downward like Humpty Dumpty

off the alphabet.

Each morning I push them off my bed

and when they get in the salad

rolling in it like a dog,

I pick each one out

just the way my daughter

picks out the anchoives.

In May they dance on the jonquils,

wearing out their toes,

laughing like fish.

In November, the dread month,

they suck the childhood out of the berries

and turn them sour and inedible.

Yet they keep me company.

They wiggle up life.

They pass out their magic

like Assorted Lifesavers.

They go with me to the dentist

and protect me form the drill.

At the same time,

they go to class with me

and lie to my students.

O fallen angel,

the companion within me,

whisper something holy

before you pinch me

into the grave.
