Punta seca

Una y otra vez, irritante y consagrada por el tiempo,
una burbuja obstinada se forma en la punta.
Reviéntala en cuanto puedas:
volverá a brotar, hasta que comencemos a morir.
Se infla en silencio, hasta que nos encierra
y nos obliga a iniciar la lucha por salir:
bestial, perseverante, real. Llega la chispa
húmeda, se derrumban los muros luminosos e hinchados,
pero no podemos dar la espalda al triste paisaje
¡qué colinas tan cenicientas!, ¡qué lagos tan salados e ínfimos!
El anillo parece de plomo,
y toda la magia de Birmingham queda desacreditada.
Y qué lejana esa habitación desnuda y soleada,
tremendamente remota, ese cubo de luz con candado
que no podemos definir ni demostrar,
y donde, soñamos, no tienes derecho a entrar.

Endlessly, time-honoured irritant,
A bubble is restively forming at your tip.
Burst it as fast as we can –
It will grow again, until we begin dying.
Silently it inflates, till we’re enclosed
And forced to start the struggle to get out:
Bestial, intent, real.
The wet spark comes, the bright blown walls collapse,
But what sad scapes we cannot turn from then:
What ashen hills! what salted, shrunken lakes!
How leaden the ring looks,
Birmingham magic all discredited,
And how remote that bare and sunscrubbed room,
Intensely far, that padlocked cube of light
We neither define nor prove,
Where you, we dream, obtain no right of entry.
